Wedding Day Traditions and Customs for the Groom

Ultimately there are no rules about choosing a band. It is up to either the man or the couple together to make a decision. Will he or won’t he. There are a variety of considerations. First, will he wear one? Once that decision is made in the affirmative then there is a whole world of choice about styles, widths, materials and the type of statement the ring makes, both for the man and the woman.

It was, in fact, during the second world war that the use of wedding rings by men became more common. (Note that for the purpose of this conversation, the terms “ring” and “band” are interchangeable, both meaning the same thing.)

It became the custom for US soldiers going to war to publicise their marital status by wearing their own wedding rings. They were happy to make public their commitment to their wife by the wearing of a public symbol that declared that commitment to all. Given that this habit of wearing men’s wedding bands was reasonably new it was all the more creditable that these men were willing to forego the marital obscurity available to them from not wearing a ring and actively chose to make a public statement about their choice.

When considering the styles of men’s wedding rings it is well worth thinking about the personality of the individual. While different men have very different personalities different rings will suit different personalities as well. A loud outgoing man, for example, can wear a more unique men’s ring.

There are many different ring materials which also reflect the personality of the individual. Titanium or Platinum are both becoming much more popular. Whilst diamonds are not, of course, as popular with men as with women, they do make a clear statement which pleases some men who choose them. Diamond rings for any gender clearly say “I can afford it” or at least the big ones do. But it can be a brave man who chooses to wear a large diamond design or something even more elaborate.

Modern day Wedding Ring Trends for the Current Wedding

The demand for more modern weddings is understandable, given that many of the traditions associated with the marriage ceremony have roots in different times and cultures in which marriage was very often a political strategy or a business agreement rather than a love match.

Although a really good wedding happens when all of the elements work well together, the top priority as far as material goods are concerned should be the wedding bands. They are the only items or wearables that will get any use beyond the day of the ceremony, so before the cake or even the clothes, the rings should be the couple’s main concern. Modern wedding bands provide many more options than the old-school standards of domed, gold, and plain. Particularly, elements like other precious stones, eternity styles, and cutting-edge metals like titanium, ceramic, and tungsten have opened the door to perfectly personalized contemporary rings.

Tungsten rings or, more accurately, tungsten carbide rings, are a distinct gunmetal gray color that sets them apart from other types of rings in appearance. Their special properties don’t stop there, however– tungsten carbide is much stronger and harder than standard jeweler’s metals and is incapable of tarnishing. Tungsten carbide rings are also extremely difficult to scratch and lend themselves well to other modern elements of design, such as tension setting and laser etching.

Another important part of your wedding day is the music used in the ceremony. Music sets the mood and inspires or heightens the emotional response to an event, so a meaningful occasion like a wedding needs it. However, don’t feel bound to the old standards of the wedding march and processional typically used– I was a part of a wedding last year that used songs by Muse and from the original “Star Wars” films to great effect, and it made the day memorable and endearing for everyone.

Flowers are another instance in which some modern touches can breathe new life into a wedding-day staple. In the past, wedding flowers were often limited by availability, but now virtually any kind of plant or blossom can be featured in your bridal bouquets and centerpieces.

There are many other ways that a modern wedding can reflect the particular personalities and tastes of the couple as well. Weddings themed to a particular era like Tudor England or American 1920s, wedding dresses in a rainbow of colors, ceremonies that include children or pets, and many more options to make your day as special as it can be are now at your feet.
